For over three hundred years the early church existed without buildings, by-standers and by-laws! After the time of Constantine, the church began to rise in respectability, wealth and social status. As the ancient gods gave way to the Christian message, the church that had been mobile, flexible and adaptable began to acquire property. The message that Jesus gave to His disciples “to go” was reconstructed to say: “Come to church.” It is not a small distinction.
You see, the purpose of the cross was to communicate clearly to the world that God was no longer interested in living in a house made with hands, but His intention was to begin to live within the human heart. We would become His temple, His dwelling place. It says in Hebrews 9:1 “Now the first covenant had regulations for worship (i.e., how) and also the earthly sanctuary (i.e. where). In other words, the old covenant, the law was known by ritual and region. Jesus died to give us something better – much better.
At Patrick Crossing we are not against buildings per se – they sure come in handy during a thunderstorm or a Rocky Mountain winter – but, we are committed to not amassing debts that would sacrifice real ministry in the real world. Besides gathering in homes, you find the people of Patrick Crossing meeting in restaurants, coffee shops, offices, mountain lakes, river parks and campuses throughout the week. In other words, we are trying to do church and to be the church where life is really being lived. Our desire is to take the fresh Word of grace to a world that might find a “church” building a formidable obstacle in their quest for spiritual truth.
